The Flywheel Effect — How Disciplined Action Builds Unstoppable Momentum

Your Paragraph Text

Everyone wants a breakthrough moment.
The big idea. The lucky break. The silver bullet that propels growth overnight.

But as Jim Collins reminds us in Turning the Flywheel: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great, real success doesn’t come from one defining event.

It comes from disciplined people, thinking, and action — compounded over time.

That’s the essence of the Flywheel Effect.

What Is the Flywheel?

Picture a massive, heavy wheel.
At first, every push takes tremendous effort. It moves slowly, almost imperceptibly.

But you keep pushing — consistently, relentlessly, methodically.
One turn becomes two. Then four. Then eight.
With each push, the wheel turns faster and faster, until the momentum becomes almost unstoppable.

That’s how great companies grow.
Not from one miracle moment — but from thousands of small, well-executed actions that compound over time.

Flywheel Effect Jim Collins

In the Appendix, Collins shares how all these pieces fit together to build an enduring great organization.

Is it an attempt to revitalize interest in his books and themes?

Collins shares in the book: To build an enduring great organization you need disciplined people who engage in disciplined thought and take disciplined action to produce superior results and make a distinctive impact in the world. Then you need the discipline to sustain momentum over a long period of time and to lay the foundations for lasting endurance. This forms the backbone of the framework, laid out as four basic stages:

  • Stage 1: Disciplined People
  • Stage 2: Disciplined Thought
  • Stage 3: Disciplined Action
  • Stage 4: Building to Last

What’s The Flywheel

The flywheel fits into stage 3, Disciplined Action. Collins shares his own flywheel. He practices what he preaches.

The value in Turning the Flywheel is Collins examples of companies who build enduring great organizations, what they’re flywheels look like, and how you can build your own.

“Once you fully grasp how to create flywheel momentum in your particular circumstance,” Collins writes,
“each turn builds upon the previous work… this is how you build greatness.”

The Four Stages of Building to Great

In Turning the Flywheel, Collins outlines a simple framework for building an enduring organization:

  1. Disciplined People – The right team, in the right seats.
  2. Disciplined Thought – Brutal honesty about reality and clarity of purpose.
  3. Disciplined Action – Relentless focus on priorities that drive the flywheel.
  4. Building to Last – Sustaining the momentum over years and decades.

The flywheel sits at the heart of Stage 3 — Disciplined Action.

Amazon’s Flywheel: The “Secret Sauce”

In 2001, Jeff Bezos invited Collins to teach his executive team the Flywheel concept.
Amazon’s leaders used it to design their own momentum machine — a self-reinforcing loop that would power every part of their business.

Here’s how their flywheel worked:

  • Lower prices → attracted more customers.
  • More customers → attracted more sellers.
  • More sellers → increased selection and improved efficiency.
  • Greater efficiency → enabled lower prices.

Each turn of the wheel reinforced the next.

That loop became Amazon’s “secret sauce,” driving exponential growth across e-commerce — and later, AWS, Prime, and beyond.

“Feed any part of this flywheel,” Bezos said, “and it should accelerate the loop

Your Flywheel Is Unique — But the Principle Is Universal

Your company’s flywheel won’t look like Amazon’s.
But it must be just as clear — and its logic just as sound.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the key drivers that fuel growth in your business?
  • Which of those can be strengthened, repeated, and compounded over time?
  • Where are you pushing hard… but not in a consistent, reinforcing direction?

Once you map it out, your flywheel becomes a strategic compass — showing everyone on your team how today’s disciplined actions drive tomorrow’s momentum.

Final Thought

The greatest danger in business isn’t failure — it’s succeeding without knowing why.
The Flywheel forces you to understand what really drives your success, so you can keep building it intentionally.

Push after push. Decision after decision.
Momentum becomes your competitive advantage.
